Lee Terry is the center’s chief electrician, primarily responsible for the opera house’s McDermott Hall. “Our equipment is outdated and we need a significant technological leap to keep up with the times. We need new lighting fixtures that can provide lighting for a wide variety of performances, make it easy to maintain the equipment, and do not need a dozen different lighting fixtures.
Terry emphasized that the hall hosts a variety of productions, from local community groups to the Dallas Opera House, as well as Broadway tours, regional theaters and stand-up comedians. That’s just one of the reasons he’s excited to see the VL800 Eventwash now in the field.
“The VL800 has become my favorite instrument,” he said. “My projects are bold and rich colors, which is what this fixture does best. It’s fast, has a long zoom range, and as a home electrician, I like low power consumption. I always need more stage lighting to work with a 20K projector. Competition with video walls, and for some events I need to light up 15,000 square feet of space, now I can easily do that with the VL800.”
While the hall is used for many different productions and events, the Dallas Opera is on site for most of the year and regularly hosts ballet and modern dance performances. To make sure the right contour lights were chosen for the Dallas Opera House lighting, Terry brought in their lighting director for a consultation.
