Complex plots and provocative themes have become the hallmark of theatrical productions at the Autumn Festival. This is what viewers can expect when “Watch the Rhine” kicks off its three-night show on Friday at the WCR Arts Center (140 N. Fifth St.).
Rhinewatch is set in 1940, a year before the United States entered World War II. Kurt and Sarah Muller and their three children worked in the anti-fascist movement in Europe, but they came to the United States to visit Sarah’s wealthy family, who were still cut off from world events.
“My mother’s father was a member of the Dutch underground,” Gagnon recalls, adding that he helped save her grandmother, a German Jew. “It makes sense because I grew up with these stories.”
But Sue Sneeringer, who plays Sarah’s mother, Fanny Mae, said viewers don’t need to have a personal connection to the Holocaust to appreciate the show.
“We want people to identify with these characters,” she said. “This is a story about family and relationships. I hope viewers can imagine themselves in this situation and reflect on their reactions.”
The show is directed by Fall Festival veteran John Gankar, who helped bring thought-provoking productions to the stage, including last year’s The Amish Project and 2017′s 1776, which featured five all-female actors, at the start of the Broadway revival. which also features an all-female line-up, was announced a few years ago.
When asked to compare the production to Hours on the Rhine, she answered without hesitation: “It’s more difficult.”
Kirk Lawrence-Howard, who plays Kurt, added, “But if it wasn’t difficult, it wouldn’t be fun.”
“I’m very close to Fanny in character,” Snellinger said, capturing the character’s difficulties. “But I paid too much attention and she paid too much attention. I had to keep her in the dark.”
In the series, the characters can only remain ignorant when world events finally hit their isolated world.
Travis Murray, who plays Sarah’s brother David, hopes the show will help viewers understand world events.
“These topics are still relevant internationally, even outside of our own communities,” he said.
Screenings are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 3:00 pm. For more information and tickets visit FallFestivalOfTheArts.org.
