Light rain and snow moving quickly across the state

A rapidly approaching storm system is moving across New Mexico this afternoon, bringing light rain and snow showers mainly to southern New Mexico. Ruidoso and the Sacramento Mountains are getting slight buildups. Showers will move quickly across the eastern plains tonight before dissipating later. Tonight the sky will be clear from west to east. So get ready for another very cold night. On Monday, temperatures finally returned to moderate and sunny across the state. A tailwind will blow in the east, which will raise the highs by 10°. Highs will be in the mid 40s for RGVs and highs in the 50s and almost 60s south of Tucumcari to Roswell.
On Tuesday it will be cloudy in the northern mountains, the temperature will drop. It will still be softer than this weekend. But anyone who lives or travels in eastern New Mexico Thursday through Friday is faced with a big problem: an arctic flare will bring temperatures 35-40° below average! Cooling will be in the range of -20-25°. This cold is dangerous and can hit people and pets within minutes. The good news is that it will quickly move east on Christmas Eve. Western and central New Mexico appear to be largely unaffected by this polar vortex, with limited cooling in metro Albuquerque.
