Country Club Plaza Appoints Special Guest With ‘Toggle Switch’ Holiday Lights

Only a few weeks away from the Evergie Square lighting ceremony, we now know who was invited to flip the switch.
The Country Club Plaza announced Thursday morning that Bob Kendrick, curator of the Black League Baseball Museum, will turn on holiday lights on Thanksgiving night.
Country Club Plaza noted that since his appointment as president in 2011, Kendrick has worked to make an impact nationally and in the Kansas City community by raising awareness of the Black League and its role in baseball and social justice.
“I am honored and humbled to represent the Negro League Baseball Museum and the indelible spirit of Buck O’Neal at this annual celebration,” Kendrick said in a press release. “This was not only an opportunity to help kick off the holidays, but also light up our great museum and complete our Thanks a Million Dollar Hall of Fame celebration.”
Country Club Plaza noted that under Kendrick’s leadership, NLBM had achieved its long-term goal of inducting the late Buck O’Neal into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. O’Neal spent most of his career with the Kansas City Monarchs, even “flicking the switch” at the 1996 Evergi Square lighting ceremony.
To celebrate this major milestone, NLBM and Country Club Plaza teamed up to fly the Monarch of Kansas City’s flag in the Plaza from November 10 until Kendrick’s guest appearance at the Evergy Plaza Lighting Ceremony on November 24.
KMBC 9 News will once again broadcast the Evergy Plaza Lighting Ceremony live. The event will also include performances by Quixotic and other live bands, as well as fireworks.
