Apple wins MacBook Pro ‘stage lighting’ class action lawsuit

A Ninth Circuit Judge ruled in favor of Apple on an appeal seeking to reopen a class action lawsuit over a “stage light” or “flex shutter” defect that allegedly caused the MacBook Pro’s screen defect.
The plaintiffs originally sued Apple in 2020, alleging that the company knew that the 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models were prone to screen failures. In particular, a defective cable has been reported to result in dark spots on the screen and even render the display unusable.
However, in July 2021, the case was dismissed. U.S. District Judge Edward Davila concluded that the plaintiffs failed to demonstrate that the issue was security related or that Apple covered up allegations related to the issue.
The plaintiffs subsequently appealed the 2021 ruling, but the appeal was dismissed in accordance with Bloomberg law.
In dismissing the appeal, the Ninth Circuit said Apple was under no obligation to disclose the issue. The previous ruling stated that since it appeared to some users after the warranty period, Apple had no specific obligation in this regard, other than extending the approved repair authorization.
Apple launched a repair program for affected models in 2019 after iFixit research determined that a cable that was built into the display was too thin was the cause.
I don’t see how this could be a “security issue” and since the repair program pays for repairs within 4 years of purchase, this should fix any financial “damage” so I’m not sure it makes general sense. litigation. Apart from the obvious purpose of enriching lawyers, that is.
