Athens film studio buys more land for expansion

In response to demand from the film and television industry for 200,000 square feet of purpose-built production space, Athena Studios announced the opening of 900 Athena Dr.
The expansion will add 350,000 square feet to an already huge facility, which is due to begin its initial phase on March 1, 2023 and will be able to accommodate productions of any size. The additional space will allow for the construction of an external space and will make Athena one of the largest production studios in Georgia.
Athena Studios CEO Joel Harber told the Banner-Herald that the University of Georgia and Georgia Film Academy (GFA) buildings, which will also house the studio’s office entrance, will open later in the fall of 2022. Designed to work with UGA and GFA, the building includes a 14,000-square-foot training center with its own soundstage.
Harber said the studio will have a secure gate behind the UGA and GFA buildings, where the soundstage, mill, offices and base camp will be located. The stage will be equipped with a “Quiet Air” system to allow producers to record clean sound without turning off the air conditioning during filming, and will be soundproofed using standard Insul-Quilts blankets.
The extended safe exterior will provide plenty of places to create sets and film outdoor scenes. Athena is partnering with Atlanta-based Raulet Property Partners, which matches film and TV production with studios in Georgia, and Forest Park-based Cinelease, which supplies lighting and gripping equipment for nearby production, power distribution, grapples, supplies, and heavy equipment. . US.
“We are doing our best to meet the needs of the industry,” said Harber. “We are proud to play such an important role in Georgia’s TV and film industry, empowering hundreds of employees and experienced suppliers in and around Athens.”
